EDITOR'S NOTE: The poet & educator Sarah Webster Fabio (1928-1979) famously responded to Shapiro with an essay of her own entitled Who Speaks Negro?" A Poet's Reply to Karl Shapiro in the December 1966 issue of the Negro Digest. Fabio was a leader in both the Black Studies and Black Arts movements.
