"Mother-Love in Water"

1947
(16.5” h x 14” w)
Tempera on canvas over panel.

Note: Preliminary drawing is included in GRAPHIC YARDARM , tho the title is given as ‘Mother and Child Bathing’ with an incorrect date of 1948 (the title in GRAPHIC YARDARM in fact refers to a very similar painting of the same subject executed in 1948, which would have been very easy for Cox to confuse with ‘Mother-Love in Water’). The surface of this painting shows a great deal of attention, with a build-up of colors, which Cox then scraped in fine lines, in swirls and crosshatching. Compare the figure of the woman with the 1947 linoleum block ‘Nude. Continuous Line - From Drawing’.
