NOTE:  In the late 1930s Cox made several experimental works from multilayered laminated wood. The effect of these pieces is a compromise between two-dimensional and three-dimensional depiction, which in effect makes the pieces look like hanging, flat sculptures. In the present example, the darker portions (the purple and dark teal areas) are about a half an inch lower than the other areas.
