Eugenio Montale

MOTTETTI / MOTETS

translated by Alan Tucker

2

Molti anni, e uno più duro sopra il lago
straniero su cui ardono i tramonti.
Poi scendesti dai monti a riportarmi
San Giorgio e il Drago.

Imprimerli potessi sul palvese
che s'agita alla frusta del grecale
in cuore … E per te scendere in un gorgo
di fedeltà, immortale.

    II

Many years, and hardest the one
above the alpine lake's burning sunset
you came down from the mountain to bring me
St George and the Dragon

if I could wave you in the air
flourish a strange device
my heart a chasm of fidelity
and you descend immortal
to a maelstrom paradise.

NOTE: 'stranieri' lit. foreign or alien. allusion to Longfellow's Excelsior ? ' gorgo' is a whirlpool. Dante's hell, Paolo & Francesca?
