"Martian Iris"

1955
(approx. 15”w by 20”h)
Tempera on panel.

NOTE:  Cox painted a number of fantastic plants throughout his career, and ‘Martian Iris’ is a fine example. ‘Succulent’ from 1952 is another, less obviously imaginary example. There is also a painting from 1955 titled ‘Lung Plant’ (not shown), which, as its name suggests, is a plant with lung-like foliage. For a later version of a fantastic plant, see ‘Pot Plant’ from 1982.
