"Dancer"

1939
(approx. 7"w by 15"h)
Tempera on panel.

NOTE:  Dancers appear in Cox's art throughout his long career. There exists, from the 1930s, a series of photographs of Cox's then future wife, Wyn Cresswell, which show her in eastern costume in a variety of elegant dance poses. 'Dancer' takes a number of such positions and portrays them at once, in multiple perspective. There is also a drawing (not shown here) from the 1930s titled 'The Eternal Footballer', which shows a similarly abstract figure with legs flailing in all directions. See also 'The Last Dance' (1948) in this exhibition.
