In Memoriam

How many fulfill
great contradictions—
a soldier who saves
lives turning his
guns on his comrades
to save civilians—
giving truth to
the common lie
that soldiers fight
for peace.
A moral impulse
amid massacre
dropping from the
sky like a dove.
How many aged
leaders have
such courage
to vote against
war and greed?
Let us honor
Hugh Thompson, Jr.
a man who goes
to his grave
with dignity
and profound
human decency.

Hugh Thompson, Jr. was the helicopter pilot in Vietnam who sat his helicopter down to protect civilians at My Lai. His report to superiors lead to a cease fire order that stopped the massacre.
